A year ago on October 18 one of Africa’s and the world’s most beloved artists Lucky Dube was tragically murdered in a Johannesburg carjacking. His music touched the souls of many through an amazing 22 albums recorded in English, Zulu and Afrikaans.
Tributes to the revered South African legendary singer have been ringing out around the world, while Rykodisc prepares to mark the occasion by releasing the album, “Retrospective” that features music from the late prolific lyricist and soulful singer.
“Retrospective” not only marks the anniversary of his death, it also celebrates the life work of a musical pioneer who effectively addressed social justice issues in his songs, especially the need or political change in South Africa.
The album is curated by Tom Schnabel of KCRW radio in Los Angeles and features a chronology that reflects the phases of Luck Dube’s career from his first release in 1982 to his last in 2006; capturing the genius, hope, and enduring truth of Lucky’s message and the beauty in his music.
The two-disc digipack contains extensive liner notes, a 13-song disc (with songs never before available in the US) and a bonus DVD, featuring a 90-minute concert, “Lucky Dube Live In Concert,” plus five music videos never before released in the U.S.
