Though he has yet to drop his debut, Tyga has earned a co-sign from the self-proclaimed best rapper alive, Lil' Wayne. In this exclusive we catch up with the young rapper from Compton, California to find out how he impressed Weezy.
The night before the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards Tyga got the call every aspiring emcee is waiting for. He found out he would be performing the "Arms Race" remix with Fall Out Boy alongside his older cousin, Travis McCoy of the Gym Class Heroes, and Lil' Wayne.
"I actually linked up at Wayne when we performed at the VMAs," Tyga said. "That was the first time I actually met him and really talked to him and stuff. At first he thought I was just a stand in for rehearsal. He didn't know who I was until the cameras was rolling and I performed."
Tyga's performance impressed him so much that Weezy flew the youngster out to a few performances, gave him a guest appearance on his highly anticipated album, Tha Carter III, and eventually signed him to Young Money Entertainment.
While two of his mentors, Weezy and McCoy, have had very public battles with substance abuse, Tyga chooses not to indulge. In fact, his straight edge lifestyle is what led him to write his hit single, "Coconut Juice."
"I don't be smoking, I don't drink," he said matter of factly. "I'll be in the club with some water or a cup cranberry juice or whatever, not trying to look cool but just [having] something to drink on."
When someone at the club asked Tyga what was in his cup the Compton-born emcee responded, "coconut juice." "It just sounded funny to say something to somebody like that and I got in the studio and made a song about it. I thought it was funny at first but it's crazy how people are loving it now."
Tyga's debut album, No Introduction, features appearances from by Patrick Stump (of Fall Out Boy), Travis McCoy, & Lil' Wayne. It hits stores June 10th.
