Update: Alicia Keys Says Conspiracy Comment Was Misinterpreted

Alicia Keys claims that she was "misinterpreted" in a recent article where she blamed the U.S. government for the creation of gangsta rap and the deaths of Tupac and the Notorious B.I. G.

When quotes from Alicia Key's Blender magazine interview started spreading, the R&B singer made a quick call to Ryan Seacrest's LA radio show, On-Air With Ryan, to clear the air.

"I did want to clarify some statements because basically what happened was that I feel that I wasn't 100 percent clear on exactly what I was saying so it got slightly misinterpreted," she told Seacrest.

One of the misinterpretations is that Keys blames the government for creating gangsta rap. "What I was saying is that the term 'gangsta rap' was so oversloganized during that time," she said.

"Everyday people, as well as the government, could've really done so much more to really obliterate and eradicate the things that were going on in the communities."

In addition, the Blender article also quoted Keys as saying that Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. were, "assassinated by the government and the media." Alicia says she's no conspiracy theorist. She simply believes that the intense media scrutiny surrounding the East Coast/West Coast beef contributed to the rappers' deaths. "It was just an over sensationalized situation," she says.

"I think that what happens is that when other people are telling the story, I don't feel [Pac and Biggie] were really able to communicate with each other and really tell each other what they meant. Instead it kind of came through different outlets and different people and it might have gotten misconstrued or misinterpreted."

Despite the controversy, Keys told Seacrest she doesn't regret doing the interview with Blender and overall she thinks it was a great article. "I wasn't saying that I was a conspiracy theorist. I wasn't saying that I am anti-anyone. Anybody who knows my character knows that I am a very positive person and my only aim is to uplift people and to spread love."
