This summer India.Arie will begin performances in the first Broadway revival of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Grammy award-winning soul singer will star in the Ntozake Shange-penned play, which shares the stories of seven women of color. Aside from Arie, no other casting decisions have been made and the theater has yet to be been named.
For Colored Girls which has also been described as a choreopoem, had its first run off-Broadway at the Public Theater in 1976 before moving to Broadway where it ran for almost two years, garnering a Tony nomination for best play. Trazana Beverley captured the Tony for best featured actress in a play for her role in the early run.
While For Colored Girls was remounted off-Broadway at American Place Theatre in Summer 2000, this will be it's first Broadway revival.
Three-time Tony winner Hinton Battle will choreograph and Shirley Jo Finney will direct.
India.Arie has previously acted on NBC's "American Dreams," where she portrayed Nina Simone. For Colored Girls is set to begin previews in mid-July before opening in early August.
